Key Fob, Remote & Smart Key Programming in Newton, NJ

Key fob and smart key programming that comes to your car

Duvall Lock & Key is a mobile locksmith based in Columbia, and we come to drivers in Newton to program key fobs, remotes and push-to-start smart keys right at the car. There's no storefront to visit and no need to tow anywhere. Tyler Duvall does the work himself out of a van set up as a rolling workshop, with key machines and programming tools on board. We're available 24/7, and you get a free estimate before any work starts.

We program three common types of keys:

  • Flip keys: the blade folds into the remote and pops out with a button.
  • Remote-head keys: a regular cut key with lock and unlock buttons built into the head.
  • Push-to-start smart keys: the fob stays in your pocket or bag and the car starts with a button.

Why a new fob won't just work out of the box

Modern car keys do two jobs. The buttons talk to the car to lock and unlock the doors. Separately, a chip inside the key has to be recognized by the car's immobilizer before the engine will start. A replacement remote or smart key, whether it comes from the dealer or online, has to be programmed to your specific car before it does either job. Some keys also need a blade cut to match your locks.

That's why buying a fob is only half the job. The programming is where a locksmith comes in, and it's what we do at your car.

Common situations we help with

  • You're down to one fob and want a spare before something goes wrong.
  • A remote was lost, broken or went through the wash.
  • You bought a used car that came with only one key.
  • Every key is gone and the car won't start. We can make a new key from scratch, cut it and program it to the car.
  • The car's immobilizer or another module was replaced and the keys stopped working.

We're lost-key specialists for BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Volvo and Saab, which many locksmiths send to the dealer, and we work on many other makes too. You can read more about our car services on our automotive locksmith page.

OEM or aftermarket: you choose

We carry both. An OEM key matches what the dealer sells. An aftermarket key usually costs less. Before we start, we'll lay out the options available for your car so you can pick what makes sense for you.

What to expect when Tyler arrives

  1. ID and ownership check. For your security, Tyler checks photo ID and proof of ownership before making or programming any key. Please don't take it personally; it protects you and your car.
  2. Free estimate. You'll hear the options and the cost before anything is done.
  3. Cut and program on the spot. If the key needs a blade, it's cut in the van. Then the key is programmed to the car.
  4. Test everything. We check that the buttons lock and unlock, and that the car starts with the new key.

For a few cars, a module has to come out to be programmed. If that applies to yours, we'll explain it up front.

Have this ready when you call

  • Year, make and model
  • The VIN, which you can see through the windshield on the driver's side
  • Photo ID and the registration or title
  • Where the car is parked
  • How many working keys you still have, if any

Practical tips

  • Add a spare while you still have one working key. It's the simplest key job there is. Waiting until every key is lost turns a quick job into a bigger one.
  • Bring all your keys if you can. Having your existing keys on hand when Tyler programs a new one can help keep everything working together.
  • Keep your registration in a safe, findable place. You'll need it, or the title, before any key is made.
  • Don't toss a broken fob yet. Tell us what happened when you call so we can talk through your options.
